I’m going to tell you about how I came to run my Dad’s business.
When I was about five years old my dad started bringing me to his business. He owned one of the richest mining companies in the world. He never told me what he was mining, all I know is he gave me this globe. This globe has all the finest minerals on it he said.
About two years after he gave me that globe, I had to move away from him with my mom. My parents were having a rough time with their marriage.  Suddenly, the only time I got to see my dad now was when he was on TV. I never could understand why he was on TV; my mom always explained, “they’re asking him questions.”
After the years went by, I slowly started to understand my Dad’s job. When he said they where the finest minerals, he meant it. But, I still didn’t know why he was getting yelled at and hated on TV. He was just doing his job.
I’m eighteen now and my mom said that my father’s coming to take me for lunch. I thought to myself after thirteen years, why now? A few hours later the doorbell rang and my mom answered it. It was him. They never talked; they just looked at each other until I was ready to go.
My dad took me to this really expensive restaurant. Shortly after we sat down, he started to talk about the real reason he came. He came because he wanted me to take over the family business. I was so excited that I could take it over. My dad said I had to leave right away to go with him to Africa, but I didn’t want to leave all my friends and my school.
“Bobby, I know I haven’t seen you in a long time but I need your help. I need to know if you want to take over the business,” he pleaded.
I was shocked to see him come back and ask me to help him. During the ride home I told him I that I would, but I needed to see if mom would let me. He didn’t seem very pleased with me asking her.
While mom wasn’t thrilled with my decision, she told me that if I felt that I needed to, then I could.
A week later I was all packed up and was on my dad’s private jet. His plane was really nice, TVs everywhere. Hours later we touched down in Africa. It was really hot, about thirty-five degrees. The thing I didn’t understand was why all the people ran away when they saw us coming. Maybe because we had armed guards?
It was while we were touring the mine that I finally realized it! My dad had one of the biggest mining companies out there, but he had slaves! He never paid them a dime and he murdered them if they stole minerals from him. This is the whole reason he was on the news, and why mom left him.
I realized I needed to talk to my dad about this, but what will I say to him? I couldn’t imagine the conversation: “Hey dad, I think what your doing is wrong” or I wondered to myself, should I just let the people go?
I didn’t want him be to mad but he did say I could take over.
I finally found the courage, “Dad, I will take over the business right know only if I can make some changes around here,” I said.
“What were you planning?”
“Well, if I tell you, I don’t think you will let me,” I said.
“What choice do I have? I’m getting too old for this,” he replied.
I summoned the courage and explained my plan. He thought I was crazy, but he told me that since I was the one to run it now, I had to be okay with my own decisions.
The first thing I did was pay all the people who worked there a bonus for the time that they had worked for free, and then I set an hourly wage. Then for a gift for their families, I gave each of them the same globe my dad gave me.  I wanted them to feel as though they owned a piece of the company.
All my staff were so happy they ended up staying and are still working for me to this day!

  1. Excellent story. I was reading it and I kept trying to think about why the young character's father was not well liked. It kept me hanging and engaged to get to the find to find out. Very nice.
